February programs for adults at Iola Public Library begin with the monthly Intrepid Readers book discussion program.

The selection for February is “Lolita,” by Vladimir Nabokov. Long before Jayme Closs and Jaycee Dugard headlined the news, a young girl was kidnapped in New Jersey and led away to live in captivity. Her story inspired this controversial 1955 novel about a middle-aged professor obsessed with his sexually precocious 12-year-old stepdaughter. The best-seller became a cult classic and is on several international lists of 100 best novels. The discussion takes place at 2 p.m. Thursday.

The next in the “A Message of Hope” series will be at 3 p.m. Feb. 9 in the Flewharty-Powell Annex to Iola Public Library, 211 East St. The topic is “Healthy Relationships: Friendships, Dating & Marriage,” presented by Hope Unlimited and Humanity House. The program will address what a healthy relationship looks like and what to do if yours is not.

The February Pinterest Party will focus on making personalized keychains. The program is at 6 p.m. Feb. 18. Pre-registration and a fee of $3 are due by Feb. 15.

“Jam and Jelly” will be presented by Kathy McEwan of Southwind Extension at 6 p.m. Feb. 21. She will teach how easy it is to make jelly to stock your cupboard. The class is free but pre-registration is required by Feb. 15. This program will be in the Flewharty-Powell Annex.

Long-term care Ombudsman Camille Russell will present “What Is a Long-Term Care Ombudsman?” on at 7 p.m. Feb. 28. Those who have friends or relatives who are in or likely will be in a nursing home or assisted living should know about the Ombudsman program. Ombudsman are advocates for resident rights of those living in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The program is designed to support and empower residents by resolving individual complaints, while working to improve and enhance the long-term care system for residents and their families.
